Polyacrylic Acid, PAA Polymer


Polyacrylic acid is innoxious. It is soluble in water. People use this PAA polymer in alkaline and high-concentration without scale sediment. The PAA polymer solution can disperse the microcrystals or micro sand of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and calcium sulfate.

It is a scale inhibitor and dispersant for circulating cool water systems, papermaking, weaving, dyeing, ceramics, painting, etc.

Polyacrylates can be made into highly absorbent plastics. Polyacrylic acid plastic has the advantages of strong water absorption capacity, no toxicity, and no pungent odor; it can be used in baby diapers.

The maximum water absorption of polyacrylate can reach 1200 times. The copolymer of methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate is hydrolyzed under pressure and converted into heavy and light groups, which can be used to prepare super-absorbent plastics. It has high water absorption and water retention.

People can use polyacrylic acid to circulate cool water systems in power plants as a scale inhibitor and dispersant, also in iron & steel factories, chemical fertilizer plants, refineries, and air conditioning systems. Its dosage should be by water quality and equipment materials. When workers use PAA polymer alone, 1~15 mg/L is preferred.


People use polyacrylic acid and its derivatives in throw-away baby diapers. Also in ion exchange resins, adhesives, and cleaning agents.

By the way, cleaning agents are copolymers of acrylic acid in many cases. Engineers also use acrylic acid copolymers in zeolites and phosphates in washing powder products.
